On the last episode of Ferris Sports Update this semester, Rob Bentley is joined by Mens Basketball head coach Andy Bronkema discussing how the team is stepping up with all their energy and excitement. Next Rob is joined with Hockey head coach Bob Daniels even though this last weekend, the scores were lopsided where even though we lost Saturdays game it still felt just as close as ever. Lastly, Rob sits down with Women’s head basketball coach Kurt Westendorp, claiming how we currently are doing the best in school history being placed seventh in the country!
Men’s Basketball
On this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update Rob Bentley starts it off with Men’s Basketball
with Head Coach Andy Bronkema. The Men’s basketball season is off to a great start going 6-0 and won
a few big games this past week. Since getting these wins this past week the team is still growing and
getting better as the season continues. In the past week Ferris went against Lewis down in Illinoi
winning 89-87. By the end of the second half, it was remarkably close with a tied score of 87-87, but
when it came down to the last seconds, number 11 Jack Ammerman makes a heart stopping 2 pointer
that bounced off the rim of the basketball hoop. They Won 89-87 by the end.
Last Saturday the Men’s Basketball team went up against Grace Christan. In the past, we lost to
them and their Ranked High in their division but ended up losing to the number one team. In the First
half the Bulldog were off to a great start passing the ball well and making some great shots with a score
of 55-29 ending the First half. In the Second half Grace Christan battle hard with Ferris but in the end the bulldogs won 106-57. Coming up for games for the Men’s basketball team, they are on the road facing two teams before the holidays at Purdue Northwest and Wisconsin Parkside. December 7th and the 9th.
Hockey
Rob Bentley and Hockey Head Coach Bob Daniels discuss the two home games against the University of St. Thomas. Going into the series, the Bulldogs were down to six defensive men instead of the usual seven due to injuries.
The defensive setback didn’t matter on Friday, as the Bulldogs put the pressure on St. Thomas, scoring four points by the end of the second intermission while only allowing one point to go to St. Thomas. Both teams secured one point each in the third intermission, ending the game at five to two for a Bulldog victory.
Saturday’s game was a much different story. This time it was St. Thomas that was dominating the game, scoring three points in both of the first and second intermissions. The Bulldogs had scored only one point by the beginning of the third intermission. Although the Bulldogs’ defense was able to keep the St. Thomas offense at bay for much of the third intermission, the Bulldog offense was not able to score any points. The final score was one to seven, a St. Thomas victory.
This coming weekend the Bulldogs will go on the road to verse Bowling Green State University on December 8th and 9th.
Women’s Basketball
Finally, Rob Bentley sits down with the women’s basketball Head Coach, Kurt Westendorp. So far, the women’s basketball team has gone undefeated in the opening games of the season. The Bulldogs have been ranked 7th in the country for women’s college basketball. This is the best record in Ferris State history! Westendorp is grateful for the recognition but wants the team to focus on continuing the good start and improving into March.
In their last game, the Bulldogs took on the Spring Arbor Panthers. It was a tough match with a lot of back and forth. The Bulldogs were leading at halftime, but the Panthers picked up their game in the second half. The struggle helped the Bulldogs play better offensively and improve their shots’ quality. The Ferris Bulldogs pulled through and won 85-70.
Westendorp was glad they could take on such a strong opponent so early in the season. “It helped to knock off the rust” as players were getting back into the swing of the game and prepared them for the coming matches against Purdue Northwest and Wisconsin Parkside.
