On this episode of Ferris Sports Update, host Rob Bentley opens up with football head coach Tony Annese. They discuss the team’s recent 4th quarter-comeback victory at Ashland. Bentley also talks with Women’s soccer head coach Greg Henson about the tied game at Findlay as well as the women’s first loss of the season over at Ashland. Lastly, Bentley talks with Cross Country head coach Jared Kelsh about the Men And Women’s first cross-country win of the season.
Football
Host Rob Bentley begins our show this week by discussing Ferris State Football with the team’s head coach, Tony Annese.
Following the team’s victory over Mercyhurst last Thursday, the team went on to score a victory over the Ashland Eagles this weekend, with a final score of 38-28. This was the team’s first away game of the season and marks the team’s 28th away game win in a row.
Going into halftime, Ferris State was slightly down with a score of 10-21. Annese remembers telling his players to just stay calm and to believe in themselves. He recalled saying, “I truly believe we are 11 points better per half than this team.” Taking these words to heart, the team managed to stay composed and outscore Ashland 28-10 in the following half, ultimately winning the game.
Ferris State’s next game will be on September 16th, and will take place in Missoula, Montana against the Montana Grizzlies.
Soccer
The show continues by discussing women’s soccer matches with head coach, Greg Henson.
Ferris State tied with the University of Findlay 0-0 for their first road contest of the year. Being placed on a smaller court than usual and playing in rainy weather, Ferris State had to adjust to the different field, but both teams put in great effort and were content to walk away with a tie.
For their second game on the road, the Bulldogs unfortunately walked away with a 0-3 loss against Ashland University on Sunday. Ferris State had some great moments and opportunities during the game, but Ashland proved to have the upper hand in this game.
The Ferris State Bulldogs are now preparing for their upcoming away game against Grand Valley this coming Friday!
Cross Country
Lastly, we look at last weekend’s Ray Helsing Bulldog Invitational Cross Country event that took place at Ferris. Head coach Jared Kels details Ferris State’s good start to the year. With a team of freshman and returning students Ferris looked great on their home course. With runners setting new personal bests in both the women’s and men’s teams. Notably for the women’s team Danae Feldpausch ran 50 seconds faster than last year and the women had a 35-second spread between their top five runners.
The men were also running their first 8k of the year, and all were getting back into the groove. Brenden Carey had a new personal best and Brandon Wirth ran around 25 seconds faster than last year. Coach Kels noted that the freshman looked good in their first 8k, which can usually be a tough task for first-year students. While the course was not ideal to start, it was still good for the Ferris team which was able to place highly.
Ferris State’s next match will take place away against Michigan State, which coach Kels noted would bring much tougher competition than what they faced in their first meet. After Michigan State, Ferris will head to Michigan Tech in late October for the NCAA regional meet. Kels makes note of Tech’s course being on a ski hill which will affect how the Ferris team will train, but for now hope to build on the good momentum of their first meet.
