Engaging Students at Ferris State: A Look at Student Government on Campus Connect Live

This week on Campus Connect Live, members of the Ferris State University Student Government share insights on how they engage students and encourage campus involvement.

Justin Reifeis, the show’s host and an active member of Student Government, reflected on his experiences and the impact of passion on his involvement. He also spoke about his time with the Music Entertainment Business Association, emphasizing how working with groups helped him form meaningful friendships with like-minded individuals. Through collaboration, he discovered the power of teamwork in achieving common goals.

Stephen Bender, President of Student Government, echoed the importance of teamwork. He highlighted Student Government’s role in giving Ferris students a voice and a platform to contribute to campus improvements. “Working with others is key,” Stephen explained. “It’s difficult to generate great ideas alone.” He also introduced Ferris Dine Together, a program designed to help new students connect over meals and games. This initiative fosters friendships and collaboration, ensuring that students work together rather than feeling isolated.

Molina Dewald, a Student Government leader, reinforced the value of group efforts in addressing student needs. She emphasized that gathering feedback through surveys and direct conversations is far more effective than large, impersonal presentations. Johnathan Stroble, another Student Government member, encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones and get involved in campus life instead of staying isolated in their rooms.

Opportunities to Make an Impact

Student Government provides numerous opportunities for students to lead and make an impact. Various board positions have been created to address emerging issues on campus. Many students have taken the initiative to drive change—whether by planting trees, improving dining services, or organizing REC Center events that promote both physical and mental well-being. These efforts demonstrate the power of student-led initiatives in enhancing campus life.

Johnathan Stroble further encouraged students to embrace leadership roles and take action. He believes that joining groups and contributing to something larger than oneself can be the missing piece many students are searching for. Becoming actively involved on campus not only improves the student experience but also helps develop leadership skills, foster community engagement, and build lasting connections. Students who participate in organizing events and advocating for change leave a lasting impact at Ferris State. One such event to get involved in is “The Big Event.”
