Big Rapids Life
Carlleen Rose, the owner of Kilwins and the Old Pioneer Store has worked at the shop for over 40 years. Her and her husband Brian Rose bought the shop off the previous owner 30 years ago. The Big Rapids Kilwins was actually one of the first Kilwins franchise shops in the nation. Attached to the Kilwins is the Old Pioneer Store. The Old Pioneer Store is a gift shop selling unique trinkets, candles, lotions, and Christmas decorations all year round. They pride themselves on their delectable treats. Ice cream, candies, caramel apples, and homemade caramel corn are all created with passion. As cook, Alana King states, “Baking is a passion of mine, so I’m not dreading on coming into work, I’m actually excited to do what I do.”
Kilwins creates amazing treats, but the memories are even better. The staff works hard to maintain a happy and inviting atmosphere for all guests who visit their shop. Customers continuously return to Kilwins whether it’s their first time visiting or their 40th. Many kids who grew up with Kilwins, now bring their children there to enjoy a sweet treat.
Join the Kilwins family and stop by for a tasty treat. Located at 118 N Michigan Ave, open 9am-9pm Monday through Saturday and 12pm-7pm on Sundays. Or visit their website for updates.
Ferris Asks
This week Ferris Asks: should we keep Daylight Savings Time? This was by far the most divisive topic for Ferris students this season and it was a pretty even split between those for keeping it and those against daylight savings. Some students want to keep it, because seeing the sunrise on their walk to class is a great way to start their November mornings. Some students say daylight savings should go, because they miss the sunlight that now disappears at 5pm. A third group appeared saying that we should keep daylight savings, because it is too engrained in our society by now that changing it would be pointless and have little effect on daily life. But the most interesting answer by far was from Glen Okonoski who thinks that we should fall back every time we hit daylight savings spring and summer.
Program Spotlight
This week on Ferris in Focus, the program spotlight is Elementary Education. Ferris’s Elementary Education program focuses on Pre-K through 6th grade and gives students the hands-on training employees look for. With an A+ rating in literacy from the National Center for Teacher Quality, Ferris stands out as the only educator prep program to receive such a rating in Michigan. At Ferris, future teachers can get in front of a classroom and teach before their first job. Sam Hutchinson, Elementary Education Senior, talks about what it means to be a teacher, and the impact a good teacher can not only have in the classroom, but in life itself. Building from the basic foundations, Ferris gives future educators the tools, confidence, and experience they need to be successful in the workforce.
My Favorite
This episode of “My Favorite” features Riley Sherman, as he explains why the recent live-action One Piece is his favorite! The show is about a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy, who dreams of becoming a pirate and traveling across the world to find the legendary One Piece treasure, left by the late Pirate King, Gold Roger. During Luffy’s journey, he meets many people who join his pirate crew, such as Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji. The crew encounters many powerful foes that stand in their way, which proves that the path to becoming King of the Pirates is not an easy feat. Riley enjoys the show for how entertaining the story and battles are and encourages all to raise their masts and set sail! See you in the Grand Line!
