Big Rapids Life

First up is a look into “Big Rapids Life” where we check out the local library. The library offers a wide variety of programs and services, from arts and crafts for families and adults to yoga for kids, story time, and movie screenings. Recognizing that many people in the area still lack access to the internet and technology, the library offers free Wi-Fi, a computer lab, and access to digital resources like the Libby app for audiobooks and Canopy for video streaming. The library also provides unique offerings, such as a “Tony Box” that plays books and songs for children and an assortment of items for checkout beyond books—like ukuleles and canning kits. There are also community-focused initiatives, like a succulent donation program where patrons can take home plants to re-pot. The library is seen as a vital community hub, especially for those looking for a safe space or to engage with others. Many library patrons, ranging from Ferris University students to local families, value the library’s resources and the sense of connection it fosters. The staff’s dedication to service, like seeking feedback to improve programs, further strengthens the bond between the library and the community it serves.

Bulldog Story

Tia Brandel-Wilhelm is the star of this week’s “Bulldog Story.” She is the head volleyball coach at Ferris State University, where she has been coaching for 29 seasons. Growing up, she was driven and hardworking, and she discovered her passion for coaching while still in college. After starting as a high school coach and then working as a graduate assistant in West Virginia, she eventually landed the coaching position at Ferris through a connection with the previous coach. Before joining Ferris, Wilhelm was familiar with the university, as her sister had attended there. She was drawn to Ferris after seeing its strong commitment to student opportunities and growth. Wilhelm views each volleyball season as a puzzle, where her role is to help the team’s individual strengths fit together to achieve success. She approaches coaching with passion and dedication, constantly planning and adjusting to help her athletes perform at their best. Over the years, the Ferris volleyball program has evolved from being solid to striving for greatness, particularly after a shift in mindset led by a group of players 15 years ago. The team’s current success builds on the culture and values established by those players. For Wilhelm, coaching at Ferris State is a privilege, and she feels honored to be in a profession that aligns with her purpose. She loves the opportunity to impact students and athletes and feels deeply fulfilled in her role at the university.

Memory Lane

Christian Gary shares a heartfelt and nostalgic reflection on his experience with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 in this episode of Memory Lane. He describes the game as a skateboarding classic with expansive levels, exciting tricks, and a killer soundtrack. What stands out for him most is the freedom the game offers—navigating open levels, racking up points with cool tricks, and grinding on pipes. The game holds a special place in his heart because it allowed him to bond with his brother, Kyle, before he passed away from cancer. Christian recalls how, during Kyle’s treatments, his mom gave him Kyle’s Game Boy Advance, and that’s how he got hooked on video games. Over the years, he’s played the game on various consoles, including the original Xbox and PlayStation 2, keeping the memory of playing with his brother alive. He also shares a humorous moment, revealing that Spider-Man, his favorite superhero, is a secret character in the game, adding a unique, personal touch to his gaming experience. Despite not being an actual skateboarder, Christian fondly remembers trying his brother’s skateboard once, only to have an overwhelming sense of fear. In the end, Christian expresses his gratitude for the memories and the game’s lasting impact on his life, signing off with a simple, “I’ll skate you later.”

Program Spotlight

During our “Program Spotlight,” we shine some light on our Medical Laboratory Science Program. Ferris State University’s MLS Program is a crucial but often overlooked field, offering significant job opportunities in the healthcare sector. The program is a “two-plus-two” structure, with two years of prerequisites followed by five semesters of intensive, hands-on education. Students dive into a wide range of laboratory techniques, learning to process and analyze human samples with precision. The program emphasizes practical experience, including internships in hospital labs, which help students develop critical skills like communication and teamwork. Students in the program appreciate the focus on hands-on learning, with minimal lecture time and more emphasis on lab work. The curriculum also ensures safety and hygiene protocols are strictly followed, with personal protective equipment (PPE) and sanitization practices in place. Graduates are well-equipped to enter the workforce, with many finding opportunities in hospital laboratories across the state. The program also fosters a close-knit community where classmates become friends, and alumni often stay connected in professional settings. Current students recommend the program for its solid career prospects, noting that it prepares graduates well for the job market. For more information, prospective students can visit the program’s website at ferris.edu/mls.

Cineskits

In this short film, a young, confident tennis player challenges a professional female tennis player, only to get completely dominated on the court. The young player is desperate to win, pleading for a chance to get back in the game, but the professional continues to outplay him with ease. After a series of humiliating defeats, the player finally thinks he’s gained the upper hand, only to be swiftly reminded of his place. The twist comes at the end when the “female” player reveals that she is actually a man.

Ferris Asks

In this episode of Ferris Asks about hidden talents, several people share surprising or unusual skills they possess. One person jokes about being fashionably late and consistently getting parking tickets, while another mentions their ability to give a “death stare” that makes people uncomfortable. Some share impressive physical talents, like folding into a “human pretzel” or riding a unicycle, with one individual claiming to be able to ride even the tallest unicycles. Other hidden talents include a great memory for random details from childhood, the ability to play music by ear, and skills in Scottish Highland dancing. One person admits to being a skilled artist and painter, while another surprises with their ability to sing, despite others thinking they can’t. There are also fun talents, such as making a harmonica sound with their mouth and whistling in a unique way—though one individual humorously notes their dad hates when they do it. Finally, another participant reveals they can “bark like a dog really, really well” and claims to be an “animal whisperer.”

College Kids Cribs

The episode of College Kids Cribs features Harmony Goodman, a major “swiftie”, and her roommate Liz Brown, introducing viewers to their vibrant and cozy shared home. They showcase their fruit-themed kitchen, hyper-feminine bathroom, and cozy living room filled with personal touches like squishmallow blankets and Barbie movies. Liz’s room reflects her personality with tapestries and sentimental items, while Harmony highlights her Taylor Swift-themed poster and a dog toy from her late pet, Howie.

Animals of the Arc

In this segment of Animals of the Ark, viewers meet Cinder, a three-year-old cat seeking a new home after her previous owner passed away. Cinder is spayed, fully vaccinated, and gets along well with both children and other cats. Known for her talkative nature and love of relaxing in elevated spots, she’s a charming and sociable companion. For adoption inquiries, viewers are encouraged to contact the Ark of LaCosta County.

Behind The Scenes

At the end of the episode, the Ferris in Focus team reflects on an emotional and rewarding fall 2024 season filled with laughter, growth, and challenges. They share their favorite segments, memorable moments, and humorous insights, describing the semester as chaotic, fast-paced, and rewarding. Team members offer advice to future students, emphasizing hard work, collaboration, and enjoying the journey. As they bid farewell, they express gratitude to their audience and encourage revisiting past content while supporting future classes. The team signs off with a mix of nostalgia and excitement for the next chapter. See y’all next semester!
