Ferris In Focus 3.5.25

On this week’s episode of Ferris In Focus, we explore a variety of engaging segments, covering student life, local pets in need, innovative academic programs, and more.

We begin with The ReFocus Program: Supporting Student Success, a vital initiative designed to help students facing academic and personal challenges. We spoke with Nick Palmer, Co-Director of the ReFocus Program, who shared how the program assists students struggling with adversity or academic performance, particularly those with a GPA below 2.0. Through automatic email notifications, students are connected with valuable resources to help them improve their academic standing and work toward success.

Next, in Animals of the ARC, we meet Dotty, a lovable female Pitbull Terrier looking for a forever home. Dotty is fully up-to-date on veterinary care and has a friendly, energetic personality. She enjoys playing fetch with tennis balls, walks well on a leash, and may even be able to co-exist with a cat after a proper introduction. Above all, Dotty adores people—especially those who know all the best scratching spots! She is currently available for adoption at the Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC) in Mecosta County and is ready to bring joy to a loving home.

In The Biotechnology Spotlight: Innovation in Action, we take an inside look at Ferris State’s Biotechnology Degree Program with insights from Dr. Brad Isler, Professor & Head Coordinator, and Dr. Schuyler Pike, Professor & Director. This highly lab-intensive program gives students hands-on experience with cutting-edge scientific instruments and research methods. With a strong focus on biomolecular sciences, students gain practical knowledge applicable to medicine, agriculture, and technology, preparing them for careers in innovative scientific fields.

Next, in College Kids Cars, we highlight Sarah Linkfield’s 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, hosted by Quinn McDaniel. Sarah’s TDI-spec Jetta features a 5-speed manual transmission, a stage 2 clutch, and Enkei rims, along with various other modifications. Since purchasing the car nearly a year ago with 250,000 miles, she has added another 50,000–60,000 miles, proving its reliability. Sarah describes her Jetta as a fun and capable vehicle, especially in winter conditions.

Moving on, Mason takes us down Memory Lane in Minecraft, sharing his first experience with the game. His journey began in 2009, when his older brother introduced him to Minecraft on a school-issued iPad. He recalls being amazed by a massive block house with a large Oregon “O” on top, sparking his fascination with the game. From that moment, Mason and his brother spent hours designing together, creating everything from rollercoasters to McDonald’s restaurant replicas. Reflecting on his love for the game, Mason states, “As long as the game still has that classic look, as long as the music is hitting as hard as it always has, I think I’ll be coming back to it for a long time.”

In Ferris Asks, students share what excites them the most. Answers range from friends, pets, and video games to sports, outdoor activities, and academic achievements. As the seasons change, many students look forward to getting outside, enjoying the sun, hiking, and participating in extracurricular activities. Academically, students express excitement over turning in assignments, engaging in major-related classes, and taking part in student projects.

To conclude this episode, we dive into The Dap Up, a Ferris Cineskit following the story of Ethan, who is recovering from treatment for manic episodes. The short film captures his journey to mastering the perfect dap up, a handshake that symbolizes connection and belonging.
