There’s a lot going on right now, and our college students at Ferris State University have a show dedicated to those “happenings.” Welcome to this week’s episode (November 4, 2024) of Ferris Out Loud produced by Zach Wallace. We are joined by our hosts Ryan Pilon, Sara Keilman, Da’Shanya Williams, and Tatum Outlaw. Our hosts begin by talking about what’s trending now including the number one album in the country, the critically acclaimed “CHROMAKOPIA” from genre-bending hip hop artist Tyler, the Creator. They then dive into “Debate” and “Game Time” segments. They end the episode by recommending their favorite musical releases.

What’s Happening?
CHROMAKOPIA
First, they talk about Tyler the Creator’s new album “Chromakopia”. Da”Shanay mentions she’s heard it has to do with stuff upcoming in Tyler’s life. Tatum talks about how she’s been listening to the album on repeat since it came out and her favorite song is the posse-cut “Sticky“. They also discuss what type of music it is and how weird it is. Ryan mentions that Tyler’s albums do not come out too often but when they do, they are very well received.
Joe Rogan x Donald Trump
Next, our hosts talk discuss Former President Donald Trump being on the Joe Rogen Podcast. Ryan talks about how it got 40 million views in 4 days. The hosts talk about how political candidates are being shown on podcasts nowadays. Ryan mentions how this is the new norm for politics. Ryan talks about how podcasts humanize them and make them hard to dislike.
Twitter Data Sharing
Ryan talks about Twitter’s new data-sharing policy, which allows the platform to own user posts and use them to develop its AI. Students express their dislike for this change, feeling uneasy about Twitter using their content without clear permission. The conversation then moves on to another update: blocked users will still be able to see public posts. This change has also raised concerns about privacy and how effective the blocking feature really is.
Debate

Kicking off the debate segment, Ryan introduces the topic of which music genre deserves more credit. He argues that blues is underrated, noting its significant influence on many other styles of music. Taytum shares her opinion that R&B is currently overlooked. Sara adds that film scores deserve more appreciation, emphasizing the emotional depth and quality of music often found in movies.
Ryan then brings up the question of whether seeing an artist live in concert is really worth the money. The students all agree that it depends on the artist and the performance. Taytum shares her experience at Lollapalooza in Chicago, where some artists put on an amazing show and got the crowd excited, while others just sat and sang without much energy. She explains that a great performance can definitely make the cost worth it, but a boring one can leave you feeling disappointed. The group agrees that an artist’s energy and the concert atmosphere are key to making the experience memorable.
For the final topic, Ryan asks whether it would be more impressive to win an Oscar or a Grammy. Sara believes winning an Oscar is harder because acting in and filming a movie takes more time and effort than creating a song. Ryan, on the other hand, thinks winning an Oscar might be easier since you have a whole film team supporting you, while making a song requires more individual creativity. Taytum adds that the film industry is open to discovering new talent without much status, but breaking through as a music artist is tougher because you have to really stand out. Da’Shanya agrees with Taytum, noting the extra challenges for music artists to get noticed.
Game Time
This week our hosts played a game where they had to figure out which musician was the odd one out in a certain category. The first round asked which rapper was not from the east coast. The Notorious B.I.G, 2Pac, Nas, or Jay-Z. Our hosts had some debate before settling on 2Pac, which is correct. The second round was a question of who has not won a Pulitzer Prize. Bob Dylan, Adele, Kendrick Lamar, or Arethra Franklin. Our hosts mostly settled on Bob Dylan; however, the odd musician out was Adele. The third question was about which drummer was not from the United Kingdom. John Bonham from Led Zepplin, Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, Lars Ulrich from Metalica, or Phil Collins from Genesis. This was a harder question for the hosts. Lars Ulrich is the only drummer not from the United Kingdom.
Our fourth question asked who a part of the hip hop group N.W.A. Method Man, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, or Ice Cube. The hosts guessed Method man, which was correct. The fifth and final question asked which of The Beatles did not have/keep a title given by the Queen. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, or Geroge Harrison. This question was a challenge to our hosts, they all guessed differently. John Lennon was given a title but returned it in protest of the Vietnam War.
