On this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update, host Rob Bentley is first joined by hockey assistant coach Dave Cencer. They discuss the two-game open header against Miami University over the weekend. Next, football head coach Tony Annese reflects on the close game against Saginaw Valley State University and what to expect going up against Grand Valley State University this weekend. Finally, soccer head coach Greg Henson talks with Rob about the team’s struggles against Saginaw Valley State University and the lessons learned from that match.
Hockey
On the first segment in this episode of Ferris Sports Update, host Rob Bentley opens up with Ferris State Hockey’s Assistant Coach Dave Cencer as they discuss the season opening. Coach touches on the ambiance change that has come along with the two new video boards that the school has provided. He also mentions the ambition to be successful that the players have had over the off-season, and it showed in the opening of the season. Starting the season off right on Saturday against Miami (Ohio) with the first win of the series. They had to fight hard ending the 1st down 3 to 0. Ferris scored early in the 2nd however, Miami (Ohio) was sure to return the favor leaving it 4 to 1 and the of the 2nd. Ferris came out swinging in the 3rd, scoring back-to-back goals within the first 3 minutes of the quarter. With a last-minute goal from our bulldogs, they were able to send it to overtime. They carried that momentum from the hard-fought 3rd quarter to overtime and got the job done. Giving a big shoutout to Senior forward Antonio Venuto for his amazing effort with two goals scored. As well as sophomore Defenseman Travis Shoudy with the game-winning goal, we couldn’t have done it without you guys.
Football
In the next segment, Rob Bentley talked with Tony Annese, head football coach for Ferris State University. They discuss the previous back-to-back home games they just wrapped up. Tony then compliments the team after fighting against the Bulldogs. Rob Bentley then asked Tony Annese about the games against the Saginaw Valley State team, and what happened was that the Bulldogs got up 14 points at the start of the game.
Tony then says in the game highlights that they started the game out stopping them, but suddenly Saginaw started to push back gaining points in the process. After the first half of the Saginaw Valley game came back and scored ten more points in the third quarter making it 24-17. In the fourth quarter, the offense scored another ten points, winning the game 31-17 against Saginaw Valley. Rob Bentley is surprised at how three of our quarterbacks got players of the week.
Soccer
Head Soccer Coach Greg Henson joins the show again this week. This past weekend the team was able to take a break from the field after Friday’s match to recuperate and rest before returning to the practice field. During the time off, the coaches were able to do some recruiting during the fall ID camp. All in all, 35 prospective bulldogs arrived at Ferris to take part in the camp. The Bulldogs lost their October 6th game to Saginaw Valley State with a final score of 3-0. “The game didn’t finish the way we would have liked,” recalled Henson, “But there were a lot of positives in the game for us we can build on”. The Bulldogs will be defending the home field for the next four matches, hoping to improve in the ranking.
