Ferris Sports Update 10.16.24

This week on Ferris Sports Update Rob sits down with Coaches Tia Brandel-Wilhelm for volleyball, Steve Annese for football, and Bob Daniels for hockey.

Volleyball

Our host, Rob Bentley is joined by the head coach of the Women’s Volleyball team Tia Brandel-Wilhelm. The Bulldogs remain undefeated after a busy week including an away game at Davenport and two home games against Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State. All three games were won 3 sets to none. “It’s a nice recognition,” says Coach Brandel-Wilhelm in regards to being ranked top 5 in the nation. They are also currently 17-0 and 9-0 in conference play.

This weekend, the Bulldogs take part in the Midwest Regional Crossover. This event contains three conferences with upwards of 40 teams. On Friday, they go head-to-head with Maryville, who they “don’t have much history with,” said Coach Brandel-Wilhelm, and Northwood. Saturday, the Bulldogs will be reseeded depending on the Friday results.

The second segment of this week’s Ferris Sports Update was alongside our football team’s offensive coordinator Steve Annese. He is the son of head coach Tony Annese. Last week, our bulldogs defeated Wayne State in a 27-14 contest, advancing our season record to 5-1. This game originally took place on Saturday, October 12 but was postponed and resumed on Sunday, October 13 due to a weather warning. The Bulldogs were on fire during Saturday evening leading 10-0 before the game was halted. In the morning, the teams returned to the field where Wayne State managed to pull a near comeback towards the third quarter with 14 points. The score was now 17-14. After being thrown off their game, the Bulldogs got back on their feet to score ten more points to cement their lead and victory. Ferris is now 2-0 in the GLIAC.

Annese knew there was a chance the game would get delayed and praised the team for putting up with the overnight mess. It was a challenge to find an open hotel in the Detroit area. They made sure not to knock Wayne State’s winless record this season and expect an “easy game.” Annese knows that each team can put up a fight. Stay tuned this Saturday, October 19 for their matchup against Michigan Tech. Hopefully, this next game will go as planned.

Hockey

In the final segment of this week’s episode, Rob is joined by Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach, Bob Daniels. They discuss Ferris State’s tough losses to Western Michigan University this past weekend. The Bulldogs lost 4-1 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday. Coach Daniels expresses his disappointment in the losses and points out areas of the team that need improvement. He believes they need to get off to a stronger start in the first period as well as make some improvements in goaltending. Overall though, he was happy with the performance of their freshman goalie.

This upcoming weekend will see the Bulldogs take on two straight away games against St. Lawrence University. Daniels says he looks forward to bouncing back after a couple of tough losses to a good team and is hopeful to get the team back on track. Daniels is also looking forward to seeing St. Lawrence Associate Head Coach, Tommy Hill. Tommy Hill was a captain on Ferris State’s 2012 National Finalist team.
