On this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update, host Rob Bentley meets with Football Offensive Coordinator, Steve Annese to discuss the Bulldogs’ impressive victory against the American International Yellow Jackets. Next up, we meet with Head Hockey Coach, Bob Daniels, as they discuss the Bulldogs’ games against Northern Michigan University. Finally, we meet with Head Basketball Coach, Andy Bronkema, as they discuss the beginning of their basketball season and how they will prepare for the rest of the season. They also discussed the first-ever Dawgs After Dark event, where they invited students to participate in various basketball activities.
Blow-out
First, our host Rob Bentley discussed the status of the football team with offensive coordinator, Steve Annese. The team did some refocusing on their strengths, which played well into their next game against the American International Hornets last Saturday.
In the first half, Ferris took on 21 points in each quarter for a total of 42 points. Ferris especially dominated in the second quarter, by returning a punt and an interception for a touchdown. The Hornets were unable to get any points on the board. Coming out of halftime, the Hornet’s defense was much stronger, stopping Ferris to one scoring drive per quarter. Although the Hornets defense improved, the offense couldn’t get passed the Ferris defense. The final score was 56 to 0.
After reviewing the highlights of the game, Annese discussed the upcoming match against the undefeated Davenport University team and how the game would be a good experience for the team. Annese commended many of the younger players for stepping up to the plate when injuries had occurred during the season. There are two more regular season games in the Ferris Football Schedule, the aforementioned game against Davenport on November 4th and their last game against Wayne State on November 11th.
A Tied Series
Next, Rob sits down with hockey Head Coach Bob Daniels to catch up about Ferris’s road trip against Northern Michigan. Ferris split their road trip series, winning the first game 2-1 in overtime, with goals by Jason Brancheau and the overtime game-winner scored by Kaleb Ergang. Their second game, however, sadly did not go as planned, as Ferris ended up losing 4-1. Antonio Venuto scored the one and only goal for Ferris.
Daniels feels that Ferris played better on Saturday despite the loss due to how the offense played during the game. Ferris will be back at home this Friday and Saturday for their two-game series against St. Lawrence. Make sure to make it out and support our bulldogs.
Activities On The Court
Finally, Rob Bentley and head coach Andy Bronkema discuss the pre-season for Ferris State Men’s Basketball. Right before the season starts, the team takes time to create excitement for their games by engaging with the community with events and services. This year, Ferris hosted the very first Dawgs After Dark event. This event consists of competitions and games where it allows the team to boost their morale and get their fans excited for the upcoming season!
Ferris Basketball also hosted a Tip-off dinner and alumini game which allows them to raise funds for the upcoming season. There was a great turnout of 140 people to watch the game and participate in the dinner. In the first half of the game, the scores were a tight 49 to 48, but the students managed to gain a substantial lead over the alumni, winning the game 109 to 89.
The Ferris Basketball season kicks off with a game on November 3rd against Calvin and a November 10th game against Northwood.
