Football
We begin this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update with host Rob Bentley speaking with the Assistant Head Coach of the Football team, Brian Rock about the team’s victory over Wayne State last Saturday.
The game began with Wayne State scoring a field goal, but Ferris quickly reciprocated by scoring a touchdown. The Bulldogs then took a dominant lead after scoring three more, going into halftime with a score of 28-9. In the second half, Wayne State managed to score their only touchdown of the game, while Ferris scored 4 more of their own. The final score was 63-19 with Ferris as the victor.
This game marked the end of the regular season and marks the beginning of the NCAA Division 2 Football playoffs. This marks the 9th consecutive year that Ferris has gotten into the Division 2 playoffs and is the longest active streak in NCAA Division 2 Football.
Having won eight out of the ten games, they have played this year, the Bulldogs are going into the playoffs with good momentum. Because playoffs are win or go home, Rock says it is important for the team to go all out and there is no reason to not pull out all the stops. He says the team needs to be prepared mentally, physically, and emotionally and that they need to execute. He notes that from here on out there will not be any easy fights and that they have to go all out. Rock reassures that at the end of the day if the scoreboard shows the Bulldogs have more points than the other team, they will keep on practicing.
The team’s first game of the playoffs (https://www.ncaa.com/game/6195795) will be on November 18th and will be against Grand Valley State University.
Hockey
Rob Bentley sits down with Bob Daniels, head hockey coach, to discuss the teams’ recent matches against Minnesota State. The Bulldogs came out strong Friday night, scoring a goal in the first half but eventually lost momentum as the match went on. Minnesota State played aggressively, finishing out the 1st half with 3 points on the Board. Despite Bulldog efforts, MSU ultimately came out on top with a final score 6-2. Saturday night’s match was hard-fought battle as well, with both teams leaving it all out on the ice. The Bulldogs played a strong defense, leading to neither team scoring in the first half. The Bulldogs scored in the beginning of the second half, with MSU answering back with two goals of their own. The Bulldogs caught up but lost 3-2 in overtime. This upcoming weekend will see the Bulldogs playing at Michigan Tech.
Soccer
Lastly, Rob talks with soccer Head Coach, Greg Henson about Ferris’s performance in the playoffs. Having beaten them in conference play on Thursday, Ferris took on Saginaw Valley in the quarterfinals. Ferris won 1-0 with the lone goal being scored by Payton Price.
However, Ferris fell in the semifinals to Northern Michigan in a disappointing 4-1 loss on Friday. Isabella Sabo scored the lone goal for Ferris in the 82nd minute. The season still ended on a positive note with freshman forward Katherine Welch winning GLIAC Freshman of the Year and being named all-conference second team.
