A Must-Win Game
On this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update, our host Rob Bentley talks with Color Commentator Sandy Gholston, about the Ferris State Football team’s victory over Davenport this Saturday.
Going into this game, Davenport was unbeaten. Despite this, the Bulldogs managed to keep their composure under the pressure and pull out an impressive victory in Grand Rapids. While Davenport did score the first touchdown, Ferris kept the game competitive and scored a touchdown of their own shortly after. Going into halftime, the score was 7 – 10 with Davenport in the lead due to an impressive long-distance field goal. However, the Bulldogs were able to come out on top in the end with a score of 28 – 10.
As the second to last game of the regular season, this was a much-needed victory for the Bulldogs in order to boost their chances of making it the playoffs. Gholston notes that games like this will help the Bulldogs build the type of momentum needed going into the playoffs should they make it. Gholston believes that the team cannot let up this momentum going into the final game of the regular season this weekend.
The Bulldogs next game will be held on November 11th here in Big Rapids and will be against Wayne State University (https://wayne.edu/). The last game of the regular season, this game also is the Bulldogs’ senior night and is set to honor a class of seniors who might have potentially seen as much success as any other class in Bulldog football history.
Hockey
Next up, Rob Bentley sits down with Head Hockey Coach, Bob Daniels, to discuss the Bulldogs’ games against St. Lawrence University. Their first game this past Friday left Bob Daniels “disappointed in our team”, as they ended the first quarter with a score of 0-2, and the second at 0-3. Despite struggling at the beginning, Ferris State began to pick up the pace in the second half of the game, but not enough to overtake St. Lawrence, ending the game with a score of 2-5.
For Ferris’ game on Saturday, the team seemed to have a much better mindset, as they picked up the pace this game and ended the first quarter with a score of 1-1. The two teams remained fairly stalemated for the majority of the game, defending against each other very well, until overtime, where Ferris State came out on top, winning the game with a score of 2-1.
The Ferris State Bulldogs will play against Minnesota State University on November 10th and 11th, and Michigan Tech on November 17th and 18th.
Back on Track
Host Rob Bentley and Head Coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm discuss the two games over the weekend as the season begins to wrap up. The Women’s Volleyball team faced Grand Valley on Friday and Purdue Northwest the following day.
The team had faced Grand Valley a few weeks prior, and they came out on top 3-2, they were hoping to do it again on Friday. After four very close sets, Grand Valley came out on top 3-1. Their first set of the game was a close 27-25, Coach Brandel-Wilhelm was hoping to take the set to get an early lead. They would fall behind in the second set, once again Grand Valley taking the 25-22 set. The girls finally managed to take a 25-18 set, only to lose the last set of the game 25-21.
Purdue Northwest kept Ferris on their toes with their aggressive and unique style of offence. Ferris started off strong, gaining both sets in the beginning 25-20 and 25-18, but as the match went on, the girls started to slow down and Purdue Northwest took the next two sets 25-22 and 25-21. Purdue Northwest was utilizing their momentum and gave the team a hard final set, but the girls were able to pull through and get the 17-15 win they needed to win the match!
