Ferris Sports Update 3.26.25

On this exciting episode of Ferris Sports Update, host Rob Bentley dives into the latest action in Ferris State Spring Football, Women’s Softball, and Men’s & Women’s Tennis as the Bulldogs gear up for another big season!

First up, junior quarterback Trinidad Chambliss joins the show to reflect on Ferris State’s incredible journey to another D2 National Championship. He talks about how the team’s rocky start turned out to be a “blessing in disguise,” sparking a remarkable 14-game winning streak that led them to the title. Chambliss also shares the honor of being named a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist, a recognition he never imagined at the start of his career. He’s quick to credit the Bulldogs’ offensive line, calling them a D1-caliber unit that will bring back key players for the 2025 season. With a parade and championship ring ceremony set for April 12, there’s no shortage of celebrations to look forward to in Big Rapids!

Next, head softball coach Jake Schumann joins the conversation to discuss the team’s strong start, boasting a 12-6 record and a recent 7-game winning streak. Ranked #26 in the nation, the Bulldogs have been tested early with key matchups in Ohio and Florida, including an impressive 6-0 sweep down south where their pitching staff shined with a 1.2 ERA. Coach Schumann also highlights standout pitcher Catherine O’Donohue, who has come back from an ACL injury stronger than ever. The team is also coming off a dominant 9-1 victory over Wayne State, showing they’re ready to compete in conference play. Game 2 against Wayne State, however, posed some challenges. After coming out a bit flat and trailing early, Ferris battled back but ultimately came up short, with a controversial missed call that potentially shifted the momentum. Despite this, Coach Schumann remains optimistic, praising the team’s all-around performance, both offensively and defensively.

Though the team is still young and developing, Coach Schumann sees a bright future ahead. With matchups like their doubleheader against Davenport University on Wednesday, March 26th, Ferris is ready for the competitive challenges that lie ahead. The conference is tough, but Coach remains confident that their preparation will set them up for success as the season moves forward. All things considered, the Bulldogs have had a strong start and are excited for what’s next. For more information, visit Ferris State Softball. Rob Bentley also sat down with the Ferris State Tennis Coach, Mark Doren to talk about the exciting start to the season. The Women’s team hit the ground running, opening their season with a notable win against a top-5 school, giving them a huge confidence boost moving forward. On the Men’s side, it took a bit longer to find their rhythm, but they maintained a high level of competition, culminating in a win against a top-10 team during their spring break trip to Florida.

The Florida trip proved to be crucial for the team, as it exposed the players to some of the best teams in the nation, providing invaluable experience. Facing such high-level competition only makes them better. As both teams shift their focus to the next big challenge, their early success has laid a solid foundation for the rest of the season.
