Ferris Sports Update 4.24.24

Thanks for joining us on another episode of Ferris Sports Update! Long-time host Rob Bentley is joined by head women’s tennis coach Mark Doren, head football coach Tony Annese, and color commentator Sandy Gholston.

Women’s Tennis

First up Bentley talks to Tennis Head Coach Mark Doren. First they talk about how the Men’s Tennis team just this past weekend won first in their league in GLIAC for the second year in a row, the first match of the weekend was against Michigan Tech, Doren mentions that the Michigan Tech players were very strong coming into the match Doren also gives credit to the Michigan Tech Doubles players saying that “they were some of the best doubles out of every team in the country that we played against” But in the end the boys at Ferris were able to take home the victory. The next game was against Lake Superior State, which was described as a feisty team, Because of that Doren knew his guys were going to have to take care of what they practiced. This weekend was also senior day Doren talks about how the seniors this year have been great leaders on and off the court  

  Next, they talked about the Women’s Tennis Team which this weekend secured the second seed in their division, their first match of the Weekend was also against Michigan Tech a team that beat them last year. Doren mentions that their number one singles player got injured early on which caused a bit of concern but the team was able to step up which he set the pace of what they were going to be about during the weekend, their next game of the weekend was also against Lake Superior State who Doren talks about how he expected them to push the team to their limit the Bulldogs really didn’t give them a chance winning 7-0, the team has the GLIAC Championship next weekend in which they are hoping to finish out strong and bring home the trophy.  

Spring Football

Next on Ferris Sports Update, host Rob Bentley is joined by Head Coach for Football, Tony Annese to discuss the Crimson & Gold Spring Football game. Annese says that in the spring, the three main things to focus on for the team is to stay healthy, have fun, and grow your abilities. Coach Annese gives credit to players Cam Underwood, Charlie Spencer, Keyon Sears, and others for their work in both spring training as well as the spring game.

Afterwards, Annese talks about what’s next for the team as they move into the fall season. Annese says that one of the biggest things that the team is focusing on is leadership, and how they have had several hour long sessions solely focused on leadership. In addition, he says that 2 current seniors on the team, Shon Stephens and Xavier Wade, have played very well, and have a good chance at being looked at for the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Sidelines

The last guest joining Bentley is Color Commentor, Sandy Gholston. He starts off by saying how high his enthusiasm is for Bulldog Football and how excited he is for the fall. He then goes on to talk briefly about the exciting moments not just from Football, but also Women’s Soccer as well as Women’s Volleyball. Moving off of Fall sports and into Winter sports, Gholston talks about how the added amenities such as video boards. They “really allow us to tell a multimedia story,” says Gholston, as he compliments how the video boards make a positive impact.

Bentley then goes on to talk about how well the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams did this year, specifically how they beat their rival Grand Valley! Moving into the Spring season, Gholston has nothing but positive things to say about Women’s Softball, “They’ve done a great job of resurrecting the program and got that program now competing and expected to win.” He then proceeds to talk about Men’s and Women’s Tennis history and how “It’s as good as it gets at Ferris State.” Speaking on Men’s and Women’s Golf, how the Men’s was able to take home the GLIAC Championship to wrap up the year for Ferris State Athletics.
